This fall several environmental groups filed a notice of intent to sue the State of Idaho about how they are managing their steelhead fisheries without a fully approved and signed Federal permit to do so, despite an unofficial agreement that has been in place for 10 years. In response to the pending lawsuit, Idaho Fish and Game announced they would end steelhead fishing on December 7th until a permit could be secured. The impact on anglers and many communities that cater to them throughout the state is significant. Now, one group, Idaho Rivers United, has announced they will withdraw from the proposed lawsuit and they are calling for Idaho to keep steelhead fishing open.
Today, we interview Roger Phillips, Public Information Supervisor with Idaho Fish and Game as well as Kevin Lewis, the Executive Director of Idaho Rivers United, about this and in an attempt to determine if a shutdown can be averted and a steelhead fishing season (along with the steelhead themselves) saved.
