Columbia River Salmon, Gillnets and Barbless Hooks - Two Perspectives
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
In 2012 Oregon and Washington agreed to a plan that would get gillnets out of the main stem of the Columbia River by 2017. That has not yet happened and on February 14th the Washington and Oregon Departments of Fish and Wildlife announced salmon allocations to recreational and commercial anglers for 2020 which includes plans for a commercial gillnet fishery on main stem of the Lower Columbia River this summer. The Coastal Conservation Association says this new rule opens the door to further use of gillnets, to include gillnetting on the main stem of the Columbia for Spring Chinook. We get two perspectives about all of this.
Bill Tweit with the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife gives the perspective from the point of view of Washington State and after that, Nello Picinich, Executive Director of the Coastal Conservation Association in Washington, shares his point of view about this. Air Date - Feb 22, 2020 on Northwestern Outdoors Radio and the Pacific NW Edition of America Outdoors Radio.
